What Is A Pecan Fried Pie?

This recipe can be described as a type of pecan hand pie. We took classic pecan pie filling, stuffed it into dough, and fried it until golden and crisp. By the end, you’re left with mini pies perfect for single servings and taking on the go.

It totally works! This fried pie recipe is:

  • Gooey on the inside.
  • Golden and crisp on the outside.
  • Prepared in minutes
  • Even better served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce

Ingredients You’ll Need

Sure, you could spend all day in the kitchen making a pecan pie from scratch, but who has time for that? For this recipe, we use a quick filling, and pre-made dough to keep things fast.

  • Unsalted Butter – This forms the base of the filling, creating a rich taste.
  • Sweeteners – Dark brown sugar and maple syrup add the perfect sweetness and a rich flavor, creating the classic taste and sticky consistency we love.
  • Raw Pecans – The star of the show!
  • Heavy Cream – This adds richness to the filling and creates a creamier consistency.
  • Vanilla Extract – Adds delicious vanilla flavor to the filling and enhances the rest of the ingredients.
  • Salt – A pinch of salt elevates the rest of the ingredients for the most incredible taste.
  • Pie Crusts – We use refrigerated pie crusts to keep everything simple and quick, but you can make homemade pie crusts if you’re feeling ambitious.
  • Egg – This helps seal the mini pies so the filling doesn’t ooze out.
  • Vegetable Oil – The high smoke point of vegetable oil makes it ideal for frying.
  • Powdered Sugar – The perfect finishing touch!

How to Make Easy Pecan Fried Pie

This recipe truly is “easy as pie.” Just follow the steps below, and it’ll be ready in minutes!

Prepare the Filling

  1. Simmer. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Then, stir in the remaining filling ingredients except the pecans. Stir to combine, and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  2. Cool. Stir in the chopped pecans, and transfer the mixture to a heatproof bowl. Allow it to cool in the fridge for at least an hour or up to 3 days!

Assemble

  1. Shape. Roll out the pie crusts, and use a large cup or jar to cut our circles.
  2. Fill. Place about a tablespoon of the cooled filling in the center of each circle, being careful not to overfill!
  3. Fold. Brush the edges with the whisked egg, fold the dough in half, wrapping the filling, and crimp the edges with a fork.

Fry

  1. Heat. Warm oil in a deep pan or skillet, adding enough to fully submerge the pies.
  2. Fry. Transfer the pies to the oil, and fry on each side until golden brown. Work in batches as needed so as not to overcrowd the pan!
  3. Drain. Transfer the fried pecan pies to a paper towel-lined plate to drain the excess oil. Repeat as needed, frying all the pies.
  4. Serve. Dust the dessert with powdered sugar, and serve warm!

Can I Make this Recipe Ahead of Time?

We don’t recommend making this fried pecan pie recipe in advance. If stored in the fridge or left out to cool completely, the batter is likely to become soft and soggy.

Serving Suggestions

For an even more decadent dessert, serve your pecan fried pies with your favorite toppings! Some options include:

  • Extra chopped pecans
  • Powdered sugar
  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • Caramel sauce
  • A dollop of whipped cream
